I am an Indonesian composer based in London, whose artistic journey bridges the traditions of gamelan, Western classical music, and popular culture. With a strong foundation as a gamelan musician and teacher, I have led workshops and projects that celebrate and push the boundaries of musical expression. My compositions often integrate gamelan instruments, Western ensembles, and electronic elements, creating distinctive soundscapes that reflect my multifaceted influences.
Collaboration is central to my work. I have partnered with diverse artists, including puppeteers, jazz musicians, folk ensembles, choreographers, dramatists, visual artists, programmers, and DJs. This collaborative spirit has fuelled innovation and cultural exchange, earning recognition on international stages. Notable achievements include being featured on the Indonesian Gamelan Composers album by Yatra Production (Italy), participating in residencies like Snape Maltings, and having works published by the American Gamelan Institute.
After completing an undergraduate degree in music in Indonesia, I earned a Master’s in Composition from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (GSMD) in London and a PhD from the University of York. My academic and artistic pursuits continue to explore the intersection of gamelan and global music traditions.
In 2024, highlights included performing at the Colourscape Music Festival, collaborating with violinist Alice Barron and artist/poet Arahmaiani for her Tate Modern exhibition, and partnering with visual artist Sriwhana Spong for the Busan Biennale in South Korea.
This year, I am excited to attend the world premiere of my string quartet Cekaking Carita at the Asian Composers’ League festival in Kawasaki, Japan. I am also preparing to perform original works for Javanese gamelan and tape loops in Berlin at Classical:NEXT, continuing my commitment to sharing music that bridges cultures and traditions.
